Scott's Thoughts

Hot News & Cool Tips

Hello world! My name is Scott Good, the owner of Goodco Mechanical. I am excited about the opportunity to share thoughts with you that I hope will provide some helpful information as well as keep you entertained.  Since Goodco is a heating, air conditioning and plumbing company, much of what I will discuss in this blog will pertain to those topics. However, I realize that I will struggle to hold even my own attention if that’s all I write about so be prepared for other items of interest that I feel are relevant and worth discussing.  I hope you’ll share your thoughts with me on the topics as well. I’ll be posting often so check back regularly.

We do plumbing you know!

It amazes that despite our advertising on our vehicles, website, yellow pages, internet sites, radio, TV, etc., people still don’t know we have a full-service plumbing division.  GOOD service plumbers are hard to find and we have several Good Guys working for us, as well as a bunch of residential and commercial plumbers skilled in installing a variety of systems in homes and commercial buildings….

Ireland Post #3 – Plumbing

If you’re getting tired of reading about and seeing pictures from my trip to Ireland, this is the last then I slide back into reality again. I thought I would add some pictures of various types of plumbing I encountered while on vacation. Since we spent a fair amount of time in pubs (which is what you do there), many of my photos originate from…

Ireland Post #2

I’ve been back a week from Ireland and had some time to reflect on the trip. Here are some general observations. First, the people of Ireland are so damn nice. On our first day in Dublin on our arrival, I was attempting to get in the left lane for a turn when a bus driver cut me off. I was beginning to cuss him out…

On vacation

I am currently in Ireland on vacation with my family.  As much as I would love to be in Pennsylvania writing a blog this week, I’m far more excited to be spending time with my wife and three sons, touring one of the most beautiful countries in the world and drinking Guinness in an Irish pub.  I’ll plan on taking lots of pictures to post…

Why regular maintenance? – Part 2 or Is that a cat in your filter?

Something occurred this past week that made me want to embelish on a previous post  about regular maintenance I made about a month or so ago.  I have attached several pictures our technicians recently took.   You are looking at air filters that are completely clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, animal hair, etc.  When this occurs, major damage to your HVAC equipment can result.  When…

It’s all about people

I am very blessed to be surrounded by an awesome group of employees.  I believe one of the things that differentiates Goodco Mechanical from so many of our competitors is the talented workforce that interacts with our customers and those that support the folks on the “frontline”.  I decided that when I started Goodco in 2008, I wanted to set the bar for customer service…

Water heaters – tank vs tankless

“My water is dead, what are my options?”  This is a questions we receive often since the average lifespan of a standard water heater is generally 8-10 years.  Soft water and regular tank draining can extend that life several years but, they don’t last forever. So, what are the options. In most cases, if you don’t have natural gas or propane, the replacement is generally…

Equipment lifespan: Repair or Replace

I am often asked how long a furnace or water heater should last. This usually follows a conversation about a major repair and whether the homeowner should repair or replace.  So what are the factors behind the decision so you’re not throwing money away on unnecessary repairs. Let’s start with how long things should last.  I have some rules of thumb I like to use…

Why is regular maintenance important?

We receive dozens of calls this time of year from homeowners whose air conditioning won’t cool the house. Our first question usually is “have you checked the air filter in your unit?” The answers vary from “I’m not sure” to “We have an air filter?” Our second question usually is “When did you last have a maintenance inspection on your HVAC system?” Your heating and…
